 Micou's Island

Protected by the tide, darkness and coastal fog the 22-acre tidal island is a refuge for wildlife and the local community.

Micou’s Island got its name in the 1930’s when the island was sold to an American family, the Micous. The Micous used the island as a summer vacation spot. The Micou family always welcomed the public to enjoy the island in a respectful manner. This generosity would eventually lead to the community effort to purchase the island.

Island Stewards are an important part of the partnership between the government and the local community. They demonstrate the public’s commitment to preserve their heritage and natural features. They also prove that community groups can manage their local environment. Most importantly, Stewards provide genuine stewardship for future generations.

You can hear a short CBC radio documentary on Micou's Island at:www.moscovitch.com/2008/10/our-week-of-stewardship-on-micous.html  The program, by Island Steward Phil Moscovitch, aired on CBC Mainstreet in the Fall of 2008.
